What
is the PVR Scholarship Fund?
In
2004, the NSS Board of Directors established a not-for-profit
501(c)(3) corporation for the sole purpose of raising funding
through major gifts, special programs, and donations of members
and non-members alike.
Management
of the PVR Scholarship Fund
The
fund is managed by a board of directors, separate from the
National Slovak Society, since it is a separate corporation
registered with the Internal Revenue Service and the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations.
Currently funds are invested in the Investment Growth Program
of the National Slovak Society. The NSS independent
and appointed certified public accounting firm provides annual
audits and reporting to the US Treasury Department and the
Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The
official registration and financial information of the PVR
Scholarship Fund may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department
of State by calling toll-free, within Pennsylvania, 1-800-732-0999.
Registration does not imply endorsement.
Solicitation
of Major Gifts
One
of the four avenues for raising funds is to approach major
corporations and foundations seeking grants for educational
purposes. Currently, the responsibility is that of the
secretary-treasurer of the fund.
"Perpetual
Scholarships"
The
second avenue is the promotion of a "Perpetual Scholarship".
For a gift of $10,000 one can establish this scholarship that
will give a grant of $400.00 annually to one of our young
members for as long as the fund remains in existence.
This "Perpetual Scholarship" can be designated in
memory of a loved one, or in thanksgiving for a particular
person or event. The donor can even choose what educational
field the scholarship should be given, i.e. medicine, education,
engineering, law, etc.
Individual
and Group Donations
The
third avenue of funding is through gifts from groups and individuals,
such as our regions and assemblies, or from our members and
non-members. These gifts may come through special programs
approved by the NSS Board of Directors, or through individual
gifts. All gifts given to the PVR Scholarship Fund are tax deductible.
"Tree of Life"
The
fourth avenue of fund raising is our "Tree of Life", a memorial tree of engraved leaves, acorns and rocks, located int he lobby of the
National Slovak Society home office, that commemorates memorials and congratulatory thoughts from our regions, assemblies, members
and friends
...a gift of $250 or more adds an engraved "Leaf" to the tree
...a gift of $5,000 or more adds an engraved "Acorn" to the tree
...a gift of $10,000 or more adds an engraved "Rock" beneath the tree.
A "Perpetual Scholarship"is available to those who donate $10,000 or more. THe donor can designate the field of study for the scholarship
that will be granted each year.
